protect your peace

Being at peace allows us to feel calm and tranquil. When we feel at peace with ourselves and the people around us, we are better equipped to deal with life’s challenges, as well as allowing ourselves to embrace life’s joys. Considering how important peace is, it’s important to protect your peace.

If you want to live a content and happy life, it helps to avoid situations and people that destroy your peace. It’s hard to feel peaceful and calm when you are constantly involved in chaos.

Let’s dive into how to protect your peace.

Know that you deserve peace

You deserve a peaceful life. When you don’t think you deserve something (whether it’s love, happiness, or peace), you don’t take the appropriate actions to make that experience a part of your life.

When you don’t believe you deserve peace and happiness, you self-sabotage. You don’t take the necessary steps or do the work that will enable that peace. Instead, you blow things up things in your life.

If you don’t think you deserve peace, you won’t fight for it, and let’s be honest, protecting your peace can sometimes involve a bit of a fight.

Understand what peace means to you

If you want to protect your peace, start by defining your version of peace.

This means defining what peace means specifically for you. It’s important that we don’t adopt someone else’s version of peace and spend all of our time working towards something we don’t really want.

You might think peace means the same thing to everyone, and there are no doubt similarities in how we all define peace. But since we are all unique in our own way, we might have a slightly different take on what peace means to us.

For example, I love sitting in a comfortable chair, with a green tea reading an amazing book while my cat sleeps nearby. That brings me peace. Looking at her beautiful little face fills me with peace and joy.

Another person might prefer going for a walk in nature to feel at peace. Others might find peace in a round of golf or some other physical activity.

Define what peace means to you and make the time to bring your version of peace into your life.

Stay away from people who rob you of your peace

This is a no-brainer in theory, but in reality, staying away from people who rob us of our peace, can be a lot harder to do.

Unfortunately, the person who robs you of your peace may be a close family member or friend.

More practical advice would be to minimize the time you spend with a person who robs you of your sense of peace.

When you know the people who rob you of your peace, you need to implement a plan to spend less time with them.

Something important to take into consideration when people rob you of your peace, it’s not recommended that you live with them. Living with people can be hard, even when we love them.

If you live with people who rob you of your peace, you need to reevaluate your living situation and remove yourself from a toxic situation. If removing yourself from the situation isn’t possible, then setting strong boundaries is essential. Setting boundaries with someone you live with can be more challenging (since physical distancing may not be an option), but setting boundaries is still possible.

Often our lives are more peaceful with a bit of physical distance.

You need to be the one who decides when you want and don’t want to spend time with people who rob you of your sense of calm and peace.

Set strong boundaries

Speaking of boundaries, setting strong boundaries is an important part of our lives. Without boundaries, life can be chaotic. Boundaries let people know what behavior is and is not acceptable.

Families with little to no boundaries are generally full of unnecessary drama and conflict. I saw this happen with an old friend of mine. Her family has little to no boundaries. They didn’t respect each other’s homes, lives, time, or privacy. In this particular family, it led to resentment and co-dependence. All of their lives could have been better if each member of the family was better at setting boundaries.

Done properly, setting boundaries can give us a sense of freedom, independence, and ultimately peace.

Let Them

I have recently finished reading an excellent book by the amazing Mel Robbins called The Let Them Theory. It’s a thought-provoking book and one that can change your life when you follow the theories and take the recommended actions.

In the words of Mel Robbins –

In this book, you’ll learn how two words – Let Them – can set you free. Free from the opinions, drama and judgment of others. Free from the exhausting cycle of trying to manage everything and everyone around you.

The Let Them Theory means letting people have their own opinions, feelings, and thoughts and not taking on responsibility for other people. Just as important is the Let Me part of the theory, which gives you the freedom to make your own choices. Let Me lets you focus on what is most important for you.

Stop chasing people who are not emotionally available

To protect your peace, you need to stop chasing people who are not emotionally available.

Chasing someone who will not return your feelings or fulfil your basic emotional needs will leave you feeling drained and exhausted.

Unfortunately, I had to learn this lesson the hard way. Over the years, I have spent way too much time chasing people who were not emotionally available.

Whether it’s a romantic partner, family member, or even a friend, we can waste a lot of time, effort, and energy chasing someone who is not emotionally available to us.

I didn’t always realize that the person I cared about was unavailable. I saw the best in people, hoped that people would change, ignored countless red flags and tolerated bad behavior. I didn’t want to see the truth. Let’s face it, the truth can be painful. It’s heartbreaking to finally accept that the people we love don’t love us back the way we want them to.

Chasing people who aren’t chasing you, destroys our sense of peace and belonging.

Don’t settle for one-sided relationships

One-sided relationships chip away at our self-esteem and confidence.

They leave us feeling like we are not good enough.

When our relationships are one-sided, we often go into people-pleasing mode. We do everything we can to make the other person happy, often making ourselves miserable in the process.

We overlook our own needs in one-sided relationships.

Don’t drown in social media consumption

Social media is a major trigger for judgment, comparison, criticism, and anger.

Hardly emotions that make us feel peaceful!

There are so many angry, judgmental people on social media, ready to pounce on people who have opinions different from theirs.

If you want to protect your peace, be careful about what you consume on social media. It’s not just about being mindful of what sites you are looking at and engaging with, it’s also about being careful about how much time you spend on social media and how social media makes you feel.

Now that AI is a big part of our lives, it’s a wise idea not to immediately trust everything you see and read on social media.

Protect your peace. Be aware of how certain aspects of social media make you feel.

Don’t go looking for trouble

Thinking about hooking up with that bad boy you find so irresistible? If you want peace in your life, you might want to rethink that. If you’re married and tempted by a coworker, I’d do everything you can to resist scratching that itch.

No matter how much you may want to, there are some actions you can’t take back. Some decisions will completely destroy your peace of mind.

When you go looking for trouble and dive into that trouble head first, you destroy our sense of peace. More often than not, the long-term consequences of our actions, will not be worth any pleasures or joy you achieve in the first place.

Don’t go looking for trouble. Because if you go looking, you are sure to find it. Instead, protect your peace.

Embrace your spirituality

This doesn’t mean you need to be religious. Of course, if you are religious and your house of worship is a fulfilling part of your life, I hope that your church and/or religion provides you with a deep sense of peace.

But in saying that, you don’t need to be religious to be spiritual.

Embracing your spirituality might mean embracing a power higher. It might mean having faith that the universe has your back

Stop thinking of a peaceful life as a boring one

I probably did this more than I would like to admit when I was in my twenties. When I look back now, I realize I was a bit of a drama queen, and when I got bored with my life, I would often do something that made things more exciting.

Unfortunately, the way I went about making things exciting often involved dating an inappropriate man or throwing myself into a relationship that I knew was doomed from the start.

I thought it made my life exciting. What it actually did was eat away at my self-worth and erode my sense of peace.

Peaceful does not mean boring. You can still have plenty of excitement and fun with a peaceful life.

Spend enough time relaxing and resting

Human bodies need rest. Life shouldn’t be an endless race from one task to the next.

Pushing yourself to exhaustion may lead to burnout. Burnout won’t bring you peace.

Take time out to rest and relax.

This isn’t just a nice thing to do in your life; it’s essential for your health. Make sure you are spending enough time relaxing and letting your body rest.

Spend quality time on your own

To have real peace in your life, you need to be able to enjoy quality time on your own.

Regardless of your relationship status or who you have in your life, it’s important to enjoy your own company.

Part of enjoying your own company is taking time to work on self-reflection. To feel at peace, it helps to know and truly accept yourself.
