Change your life 5 seconds at a time with the 5 second rule.

I  just finished reading an awesome book and wanted to share it with you.

There’s quite a bit of buzz flying around about this book at the moment and I can definitely understand why.

It’s called The 5 Second Rule.

It’s written by Mel Robbins and I have to say it’s brilliant!

So what’s it about? Well, it’s a book about HOW to make change happen. It’s about how to change your life 5 seconds at a time.

A lot has been written about what you need to do to change your life as well as why you need to do it. We all know we should do certain things but it’s the HOW where we often come unstuck.

We don’t do important things that we know will make our lives better because we don’t feel like it. Instead, we sit around waiting to feel like it or trying to motivate ourselves to do it.

This book can help you be more productive, help you crush self-doubt and overthinking, and get you taking action.

It’s about training our brains to be a person who takes continuous action (and no that doesn’t mean it’s about being busy all the time).

I love reading books about the science of our brains, there’s just one small problem. They are often too complicated. They use terminology that my brain at least doesn’t fully understand or is so complex that they are downright boring.

Mel Robbins has a way of cutting through all of that. She talks about the science but explains it in a way that you can understand.

The book is also scattered with social media stories of people who have been using the rule. It’s amazing to see their everyday acts of courage as they work towards changing their lives.

That’s the other thing – this book is about courage.

Not the jump out of a plane with a parachute strapped to your back type of courage (though the rule would help with that too) but everyday courage that transforms our lives and makes us happier and more confident.

The 5 Second Rule

The 5 Second Rule itself is simple.

At first, you might even wonder how it works because the premise seems so simple.

As with many things in our lives, it is simple but not easy (as Mel mentions throughout the book).

The 5 Second Rule: Transform your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage teaches us to be a person of action, instead of someone who self-sabotages.

The rule turns action into a habit.

Habits help break through our self-doubts, fears, and anxieties.

Taking action is what it’s all about. What we often don’t realize is that the power is in taking the action (sometimes more so than in the result itself). The more courage and confidence we have the more action we take and the more momentum we have toward the life we want.

The 5 Second Rule is about making decisions 5 seconds at a time and not holding yourself back.

About the author

I first discovered Mel Robbins by watching a TED Talk. Somehow I think a few people might have also discovered her this way, because the video has had well over 8 million hits and counting!

Mel is a super inspiring person. I have to admit when I watched her on TED I thought to myself, here’s an extroverted person who has it all together (and probably always has). Extraversion can sometimes look that way (particularly to us introverts) but it’s often not the case.

It was fascinating to read Mel’s actual story and learn how discovering (and using) The 5 Second Rule completely transformed her life.

Grab a copy of the book for yourself, The 5 Second Rule: Transform your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage.

When you buy the book, you can also sign up to receive via email 31 free mentoring videos. I signed up and have watched the first two and I know I’m going to love being inspired (and yes doing my homework) over the 31 days. Definitely make sure you sign up for the videos as well, they’re really good!

I highly recommend this book.

I personally bought it on Kindle but I want to buy myself a print version as well, because I know it’s going to be one of those books I refer back to and re-read regularly.
