It's about what you do - so take action now.

I was on the train the other day when I finished an eBook I’d been reading. As I got to the end of the book, I realized something interesting.

Besides one or two minor details, I knew most of the information in the book. Whilst the book was inspirational (which is good), I realized I hadn’t learnt all that much from reading it.

I knew the information already.

What struck me next was astounding. Despite the fact that I knew the information already – I was not doing anything with it.

I knew the information but I was not applying it.

It’s not about what you know. It’s not about how smart you are or how many books you’ve read or degrees you have or businesses you want to start.

It’s about what you actually DO with that knowledge that changes everything.

I often buy books hoping to learn a particular piece of information, yet the more I read the more I realize that many books don’t have the level of detail that I’m looking for.

As hard as this may be to accept sometimes – the detail only comes from doing.

How do we go from learning information to applying it in our lives.

Summarize the key points

If you are trying to get the most out of a book, it helps to summarize the key points of what you have learned.

More importantly, you need to personalize what you have read because not everything in every book is going to apply to you. It is up to you to figure out what is going to be helpful in your unique situation.

Trial and error

Sometimes you need to try different approaches to find out what is relevant to you. You won’t always know what is going to work until you try different techniques and strategies.

You can’t take on every piece of advice that you read.

Avoid shiny object syndrome

I struggle with this one myself. I might be in the middle of reading a fascinating book when other book taking my fancy and off I go to discover what the other book has to offer. Or it might be a new blogging course or a new blogging website.

Before I know it, I haven’t implemented anything from my original learning. I’m just skipping around picking up bits of knowledge and information but not doing anything with them.

Take action

You can read all the books you want or take all the courses you like but if you don’t implement and take action nothing will come out of it.

You must take action on your new knowledge and wisdom.

Be dedicated to self-improvement

If you want to make serious changes in your life, you need to be dedicated to self-improvement. You need self-discipline and determination. You also need to be able to resist the millions of distractions and temptations that come our way.

It’s what you DO

Detail comes from experience and doing the task yourself. It comes from stumbling through and learning from mistakes (a concept which scares a lot of people).

It doesn’t matter what you read in a book or learn on the net, it’s what you DO that matters.
