I have been reading Ash’s blog The Middle Finger Project for quite a while now. I am a member of her group 97 in ’11 and subscribe to her blog posts.
What can I say, I’m a fan!
Loving Ash’s work as much as I do, it made perfect sense for me to purchase and promote Ash’s product on my own blog.
This is probably a good time to mention this is also my first eBook review. If there is a standard format for writing a review, I’m not aware of it, so expect this one to be perhaps unconventional but definitely written from the heart.
Ash’s eBook You Don’t Need a Job, You Need Guts is written in the same witty, cheeky and wise style as her blog.
Ashley (bless her) tells it like it is. She is open about how much work, patience and effort is required for digital entrepreneurship. She doesn’t sugar coat the fact that at times, building an online business will be downright scary.
This book is all about standing up, taking action and starting an online business based around your unique talents, knowledge and opinions. Ash motivates you to take action. This eBook is not for the fainthearted or those who say they want to start something but never actually do anything. This eBook is for those who are ready to roll up their sleeves, do the hard work and have some fun along the way.
Ash’s core message from the 127 page eBook is combining Passion + Self + Business Through Digital Entrepreneurship. The book is broken down into 26 points or chapters.
I have to admit I was hooked on page 4, the moment I read ‘we do things just because…..’
As someone who has worked hard to leave a corporate environment and start working for myself, I can totally relate to this section. I have been living this section, tolerating a job that made me miserable but paid well, for far too long. I was sick of following the status quo simply because that is what is expected of us.
Ash’s writing in this section will light a fire under you. I know it did for me. Come to think of it, all of Ash’s writing will have that effect, her writing has that sort of infectious energy.
Point 11 offers valuable insights into setting up your blog. I wish I had purchased this eBook and read this section BEFORE I started my own blog. Ash explains how to set up a WordPress blog the easy way as opposed to the weekend long drama I somehow managed to put myself through.
If you are starting to create your blog, Ash’s advice will save you a lot of time, energy and hair-pulling.
That withstanding, even though I have been running my blog for well over a year now, I still learnt a lot from this eBook. There was an abundance of practical advice from a business and branding prospective as well as a few AHA moments where I had not put two and two together until reading the book. Those AHA moments are pivotal for my progress and success.
The nine strategies on how to make money from your blog were particularly useful. Though I have read a lot of information about making money online, I have to be honest and admit I suffered from a case of information overload on the subject. Not to mention, I wasn’t sure who I could trust in the past. Ash cleared up some of the questions I had in this area.
There are also some great external links and thought provoking quotes scattered throughout the book.
In my opinion the people that will benefit the most from this eBook are:
- Anyone who wants to follow their passion and make money being themselves
- People who know they are destined for something other than the 9-5 cubicle but need guidance and quite frankly a good kick up the butt to get them going
- Anyone who wants to be inspired and motivated to start an online business
- Anyone who wants to read about online business in an interesting, down to earth, yet witty fashion. (Because let’s face it, some business information can be a tad boring – which I assure you Ashley is not.)
I recommend sitting in a comfy chair (grab yourself a glass of champers as Ash would say) and read through the entire eBook in one sitting. Take notes and then go back and reread the sections that are particularly relevant for you, then get cracking and take action. Note: taking action is the important part. Don’t even think about skipping this step.
If you want to kick start your life and get on with what really makes you happy, then grab yourself a copy of Ash’s fabulous eBook.

I’m so, so glad you found it useful! Once I get done launching some other courses (a new one coming up this week on getting more clients + cash), I’ll be looking at expanding GUTS into a much bigger and more comprehensive course. Stay tuned!
Thanks so much for the mention here.
Cheers!
